Coach Steckel was born and raised in Davenport, participating in athletics at Adams Elementary, Williams Junior High and Davenport West High School. At Davenport West, Wade concentrated on basketball, and was a 3 year letter winner. His senior season he was selected first team All-Metro Conference, first team All MAC conference, and third team All-State on the Coaches and Des Moines Register teams.
Wade was recruited by a number of Division II and III schools, but choose to play at the University of Dubuque along side his older brother, Chad. Coach Steckel received a varsity letters his two years at the University of Dubuque. He also was selected to the 2nd team All Iowa Conference.
Coach Steckel has been an area youth coach for over the past 20 years, mostly at the elementary and junior high level. He coached primarily at Trinity Lutheran School where he lead all his teams to winning seasons, and has won Lutheran District Championships as well as Lutheran tournaments. In 2004, he was asked to take over the freshman coaching duties under second year varsity coach Mike Reid.
Wade has been married to his wife Lu Ann for 20 years, and is raising two son's, Andrew (17), and Ryan (13). Wade and Lu Ann have also foster parented three other young men over the past 5 years. Coach Steckel enjoys his family, fishing, golf and spending time with friends when he is not coaching. He has been employed with State Farm Insurance for 14 years as a Claim Team Manager, managing the Moline, IL office.
