Hall of Honor Recipient
Lafayette James Twyner, DDS, was a very busy and
active man. After receiving a BS Degree from St. Ambrose and
graduating from the University of Iowa School of Dentistry in 1947, he
became the first black dentist in Davenport. Following service in the
army as a 1st Lt. During the
Korean War, and in addition to his busy dental practice, he found time
to serve on the Iowa State Civil Rights Commission, Scott County Crime
Commission, NAACP, Davenport Chamber of Commerce, plus coaching
various youth baseball programs. He was honored with the NAACP
Outstanding Community service Award in 1977.
In addition, he was a positive and strong influence
on the Davenport School Board for 23 years, serving as President in
1973, and was honored for his deep commitment to the Davenport schools
in 1990 by the Davenport education Association.
He has received numerous awards by various
universities ranging from alumni activities to business recognition,
and by his community and state for his volunteerism.
