Hall of Honor Recipient

Simon O. Roberts
Class of 1954
Inducted in 1992

    Simon (Si) Roberts has been a leader, role model and community volunteer throughout his high school, university and adult years. He became the first African-American State High School Wrestling Champion and at the University of Iowa was the first African-American NCAA College Wrestling Champion. He received his BA degree in Sociology from the University of Iowa, 1959, his MS degree in Education from Northern Illinois University, 1981, and also attended St. Ambrose College in 1966.

    Simon is currently Director of Adult Education and Assistant to the president for Diversity at Black Hawk College, Moline. His department touches the lives of over 13,000 persons annually.  As a teacher at Alleman High School and administrator at Black Hawk, his expertise and dedication have always targeted the disadvantaged and disabled persons.

    Si’s experience in public affairs includes his position as host for public service programs on local and ABC television.  During 1970-76 he was Commissioner for the Davenport Park Board and in this position became the first African-American elected to a Davenport political office. His professional and community activities involve membership or chairman of over sixteen different boards and committees which span a variety of problem areas from black substance abuse to National Governor'’ Association Literacy Exchange Advisory Board to Catholic Interracial Council.

    Among his many honors are the Outstanding Service Award, Iowa Black Alumni Association, University of Iowa (1987) and Iowa High School (1984) and Wrestling Foundation (1988) Halls of Fame.

    Simon O. Roberts emphasizes team building as the cornerstone to life and participation as the catalyst for change.
