Mary Beth Peil
Class of 1958
Inducted in 1989

    A nationally known singer who was the last person to appear as the “I” with Yul Brenner on Broadway in “The King and I,” she currently is on tour with the National company of “The King and I” opposite Stacy Keach.  While at Davenport Central High, Peil sang in most school productions and appeared with Quad-City Music Guild.  Her career took an upswing after her graduation from Northwestern University. A lyric soprano, she has appeared in the role of Micaela in “Carmen” with the Metropolitan Opera Company, and in the role of Mimi in “La Boheme.  ”She has been soloist with opera companies in major U.S. citi8es, and was nominated for a prestigious Broadway Tony Award.

    Ms. Peil had the lead in the first opera based on one of Tennessee Williams’ plays - “Summer and Smoke.” Associated Press called her “a super star” and after the premiere, Williams went backstage and said, “You were radiant, baby.”  Her home is in Leona, NJ.
