Hall of Honor Recipient

Pamela J. Parker, Ph.D.
Class of 1963
Inducted in 1990

In the world of environmental science, the name Pamela Parker is recognized instantly as she is an internationally known conservation biologist.  At present, she is head of the Research Staff and Assistant Director of Chicago Zoological Park.

A world traveler, she is in constant demand for seminars and speaking appearances. She is particularly known for her work in species survival and land studies.  In Australia, the government has presented her many honors for “bringing back” an area so desolate that it was said, “Cactus won’t even grow here.”

There are many facets of her scientific life.  For example, she is a world authority on the wombat, a burrowing Australian creature. She completed the most authoritative work to date on this animal.  Dr. Parker is known the world over for her efforts to change the image of zoos for the preservation and protection of animals and to further exchange information between zoos.  She says that expert zookeepers in our major world zoos are no longer “animal keepers but experts in conservation biology.”

She is widely published and is recognized for her extensive efforts in the conservation of nature and natural resources.
