Hall of Honor Recipient
Mrs. Kirtland is a 1933 graduate of Davenport High
School and continued her education with degrees from Augustana College
(BA 1937) and the University of Michigan (MS 1943). During her
career, Mrs. Kirtland served with the Children's Department at the
Davenport Public Library starting in 1937 and concluded her tenure
with the Davenport Library as Head of the Extension Department in
1945. From Davenport she went to the Eli Lily and Company, in
Indianapolis, Indiana to the Library of the Lilly Research
Laboratories. Mrs. Kirtland started as Assistant Librarian in
1945 and served as Chief librarian from 1956 to 1979. During her
tenure she computerized the library operations benefiting Lilly
researchers for their literature needs and helping the efficiency of
the library operation. Mrs. Kirtland has served on the Medical Library
Association as secretary, 1952-53, Board of Directors, 1952-53, (she
was the first industrial librarian to serve as an officer), Chairman,
Recruitment Committee, 1953-53, Chairman Curriculum Committee, and
Chairman, Pharmacy Group, 1955-58 and Executive Committee, Midwest
Regional Medical Library Group, 1963-68. In addition she served
as president of the Pharmaceutical Division of the Special Libraries
Association from 1959-60 and President of Indiana Chapter,
1967-68. She also was on the Governing Board of the Midwest
Health Sciences Library Network from 1969-1973. Mrs. Kirtland
also served on the board of directors for the following institutions
and organizations: Augustana College Alumni Association,
First-Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church, Starlight Musicals,
P.E.O., Meridian Heights Inter-Se Club and is a member of many
Indianapolis area Civic and Fine Arts associations and
foundations. She has received recognition honors fro outstanding
achievement from the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, Augustana
College and the Indiana Chapter of the Special libraries
Association. Her Biography is in "Who's Who of American
Women", "Who's Who in the Midwest", and
"Who's Who Among Students of American Universities and
Colleges". Mrs. Kirtland was involved in the establishment
and has continued to support The Harold E. and Louise Lage Swanson
Scholarship, The Hugh C. and Louise Lage Kirtland Scholarship and The
Louise Lage Kirtland Academic Resources Fund, all at Augustana
College. Mrs. Kirtland and her husband continue to support
ongoing campaigns at Augustana College as well as Cottey Junior
College in Missouri. Through her church Mrs. Kirtland works with and
supports a number of programs that help disadvantaged teens and
teenage parents. Mrs. Kirtland and her husband are also
contributors to the Libri Foundation which distributes children's
books to under funded, small libraries in rural America. Mrs.
Kirtland was nominated by Mr. Keith Jurgens.
