Dr. Gayle Hopkins
Class of 1960
Inducted 2000

Dr. Hopkins is a 1960 graduate of Davenport High School where he was a star in football, basketball, track, and baseball. He led his teams to state championships in football and track and to state runners-up places in basketball and baseball. As a student at Davenport High School, Gayle was one of the greatest athletes in Iowa prep history.

Dr. Hopkins is currently the Associate to the Athletics Director, Alumni services, at the University of Arizona. He initially joined the UA staff in 1983 coming from Claremont College where he was track coach and director of physical education. He is a member of the Quad Cities Sports and the Drake Relays Halls of Fame. Hopkins was a standout athlete in track at Arizona and was the Wildcats' first NCAA champion (long jump, 1964). He represented the United States in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a long jumper. He is a charter member of the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame and a former member of the NCAA Track and Field Committee. Dr. Hopkins is active in many community activities including Urban League Caucus, NAACP, and Employment Opportunities fro Minorities. Dr. Hopkins taught school in Tucson and California and was an instructor at San Francisco State and Claremont. He was an EEO specialist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1979-80. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Arizona, a Master's from Sand Francisco State and a Doctorate from Claremont. Dr. Hopkins is married to Patricia Hopkins and they have a daughter, Alissa and a son Chris.
