Hall of Honor Recipient
Malvin Hansen extended the speech and debating
skills learned at DHS into a highly successful radio and television
career. His programs on soil conservation received the coveted George
Foster Peabody Award. Mr. Hansen attended the University of Iowa
for his BA and MA degrees, and began his broadcasting career while a
graduate student conducting discussion programs on radio station
WSUI. His first full-time employment was at radio station WHO in
Des Moines, then farm editor at radio stations KSO/KRNT in Des Moines.
World War II intervened and he served as a
communications officer in the Navy. As Farm Director at Radio
station WOW in Omaha in 1946, he led one of the first large group
travel delegations to Europe to study the food situation and the
development of the Marshall Plan and originated numerous radio
programs from six countries there. A pioneer in television
broadcasting beginning in 1949 with station WOW, he later became
president of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters. Many
of his telecasts were seen on NBC. Among his numerous honors was his
appointment to the Advisory Committee to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture
Benson.
Not satisfied with one successful career, he
subsequently headed a travel company for 16 years. For some time
it has been one of the ten largest agencies in the U.S. While
there, he was vice president of the National Association of Bank
Travel Bureaus and an officer in the Midwest region of the American
Society of Travel Agents.
While living in Omaha, he has served as president
or chairman of several hospital and mental health committees, Chamber
of Commerce, Rotary, his church and several broadcasting organizations
and farming associations.
He has been awarded many broadcasting honors
including the Outstanding Professional and Achievement and Service in
Journalism Award from Creighton University, Award of Merit - city
College of N.Y., Certificate of Commendation - Nebraska County Agents
Association Honorary Farmer Degree - Iowa Assoc. of F.F.A., U.S.
Treasury Award for U.S. Savings Bond Sales, etc.
His travel field has also awarded him honors - the
Award of Merit for Promotion of International travel from Pam American
Airways, Outstanding Leadership Award from United Airlines and a Life
Membership from the Institute of Certified Travel counselors.
Other honors were recognition awards, Omaha Chamber of Commerce,
Certificate of Honorary Recognition - U.S. Small Business Admin. And
the U.S. State Dept. Commendation for participation in the
International Visitors Program.
