Susan Glaspell, well-known playwright, lived in
Davenport until 1910 when she made her home in the East.
Frequently she alluded to her early life in Davenport and the
importance of her ancestors. During her early professional days,
she was a member of the Davenport Tuesday Club and the Davenport
Monist Society. As a newspaper writer, she wrote for the
Davenport Republican, the Weekly Outlook and the Des Moines Daily
News.
Susan Glaspell is credited with seven one-act
plays, seven full-length plays, nine novels and over fifty short
stories. The biography of her husband, George Cram Cook,
The Road to the Temple, is considered a classic in literature.
Miss Glaspell won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for
Drama in 1931 for her play, Allisons House.
With her husband, she founded the first modern American theatre group,
The Provincetown Players. Her literary contributions have drawn
international acclaim.
