Hall of Honor Recipient
Robert H. Bickford, M.D., M.Th., wears a
stethoscope around his neck during the week and a clerical collar on
Sundays. Ordained in the Presbyterian ministry, he served as a
chaplain in the Army during World War II. In 1944 Bickford
entered medical School at the University of Iowa, graduating with
honors in 1947. Dr. Bickford was recalled to military duty
during the Korean War and served as a Captain in the Medical
Corp. He was a Professor of Military Science and Tactics
(medical) at the University of Iowa. While in Iowa City he became
pastor of several Central Iowa churches. Later, when reassigned
to Walter Reed Army Hospital, he served as pastor at the Old
Presbyterian Church in McLean, Virginia.
In his years of practice from 1955-1968 in Stephens
Point, Wisconsin, he became actively involved with the Rice Medical
Clinic where he was Chief of Medical Service and Chief of Staff at St.
Michaels Hospital. His clinical work with the Mayo Clinic
led to pioneering efforts in the area of hem dialysis. Dr.
Bickford was also instrumental in developing HMO programs in
Wisconsin, all the while serving a number of churches as pro-tem
minister.
He has published a number of papers and presented
numerous programs on a variety of medical problems. Beyond these
efforts he has served on numerous boards and in organizations to
develop and promote more effective medical care and service.
In the diversity of his interests, he has also
acquired prominence as an entertainer and has been elected a member of
the International Brotherhood of Magicians and to the Hobby Hall of
Fame.
