How to Open JPG Files

By Karen Hosmer

On the new Dells (will not work on the Windows 98 machines), to find a .jpg file, you can do a search by:

  • Go to Start…Search…For Files and Folders
  • In the top box that labeled "All or part of the file name" enter " *.jpg " exactly as written, but without the quotation marks.
  • It will find several .jpg files on the computer.
  • Highlight one of the files, but do not try to open it.
  • Right click on the mouse

Scroll down to "Open With" then select "Choose Program"

  • You will see a box with several options, highlight Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
  • Place a check mark in the box toward the bottom that is labeled "Always use the selected program to this kind of file
  • Select OK, you are finished.
  • You can do the same thing with .tif files; just make the substitution, .tif for .jpg.

Quote of the moment:
One ought never to turn one's back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half.
-Sir Winston Churchill
