ProStart
ProStart Fundraiser to Send Students to State & National Competitions. ProStart is a nationally-recognized program developed by the National Restaurant Association to prepare students for careers in culinary arts and/or restaurant management. Davenport was the first school district in Iowa to offer the program beginning in 2003. Housed at Central, it is open to students at all 3 high schools. Pro Start had its 3rd Annual ProStart Fundraiser on February 8th. Area chefs and local businesses donated their time and resources for the event. It was held at the Davenport Country Club. Action stations of various gourmet foods were set up throughout the Club. ProStart students assisted chefs and hosted their own salad station. People helped themselves to any or all of the stations as many times as they liked. Menu items included:
In spite of the bad weather, over 200 people were in attendance. Members of the Mississippi Valley Restaurant Association graciously joined in the festivities. No one went away hungry and everyone seemed to have a great time. Proceeds from the event will be used to pay expenses for students to participate this spring in the Iowa ProStart competition and, if they win State, the national ProStart competition. Davenport students have taken first place at State in both the culinary and management competitions every year. Students have traveled to Colorado, Florida, North Carolina and California for past competitions. This year the national competition is in Overland Park, Kansas. Good luck to the ProStart students in this year’s competitions. The following are some pictures from the huge fundraiser and the State ProStart competition. A special thanks goes out to the following persons for their wonderful help with the fundraiser:
