Art CoursesWhile the need for additional supplies will be kept to a minimum, students will be required to furnish or purchase materials for some art projects. Visual Studies (115201) this course is designed for students who have an interest in art ideas and history. Content will include the study of major artists, concepts and styles in the history of art. Visiting art galleries and museums will be included. Art Foundations (118921) This course is a general survey of the visual arts. It will provide a variety of studio experiences in such areas as drawing, painting, ceramics and mixed media. The course will deal with the elements of art, principles of design, and the history of art. Drawing (116111) Drawing is the basic means for creating visual images. It is a way of thinking. In this course students will be able to express and communicate their ideas and feelings through various drawing materials and techniques. An introduction to the history of drawing will be included. Painting (116221) this advanced course will challenge students to become skilled creators of painted images. Students will become knowledgeable about painting media, techniques and styles. An introduction to the history of painting will be included. Ceramics and Crafts (116411) This course will provide students many opportunities to design and form different objects in clay and other three-dimensional materials. Many processes will be used such as hand-building with clay. An introduction to the history of ceramics and crafts will be included. Sculpture (116312) The area of sculpture involves the design and creation of artistic forms and objects. Many processes will be used such as modeling, carving and casting. An introduction to the history of sculpture and architecture will be included. Jewelry Design & Production (118931) This course is designed to provide students with a fundamental knowledge of jewelry making. Basic elements of design and techniques associated with sawing, soldering, fabricating, and use of the “lost wax” casting procedures will provide the focus for instruction. In addition, a process known as enameling will also be studied. Use of torches for soldering and small jeweler’s saws for cutting will be necessary. Copper, brass, and sterling silver will be used in the creation of projects. A fee will be charged for the use of sterling silver. Commercial Art (118911) this course consists of problems in design and drawing for reproduction. Areas covered will include lettering, illustration, airbrush painting, computer graphics, layout and various printing processes. Career information will be provided. Photography (117111) In this course students will learn to select, expose and process photographic materials, use and enlarger and produce prints, which satisfy basic technical and artistic standards. Students will be expected to have their own camera and will furnish most of the expendable materials. Advanced Photography (117121) In this advanced course a variety of approaches to photographic composition will be explored. Class activities will include slide presentations and a group photo exhibit. While black and white photography will be emphasized, and introduction to color photography will be included. Computer Graphics & Design (031511) This course is designed to prepare students for the career fields of computer graphics and computer assisted design. This introductory course will provide students a background in both the hardware and software associated with basic graphic techniques, drafting, and commercial design. Students will be required to learn computer keyboard operations and will use various graphic peripherals to solve basic design problems. Computer Graphics & Design II (031541) This advanced class is a one-term course offered to anyone who has successfully completed the Computer Graphics and Design I course (031511). It will provide students with a background in digital graphics, computer assisted design, and video. A primary emphasis will be applying digital adjustments to graphic designs and videos using the Adobe Software Series (Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, Premiere), in addition to producing individual projects, design services will be available to all departments in the school. Production of these designs will be possible through the use of a large format printer. This application will create a real-life work experience for the students as they consider career applications in computer design for the future. Computer Graphic Printing (031521/031522) This is a full year, interdisciplinary course between the Art and Industrial Technology Departments is designed for students who have an interest in the application of art to the use of commercial printing. Students will build skills in computer design, photography, stripping, press work, photo-silk screen, and will gain a deeper understanding of communication through advertising. Problem solving will be stressed, as students will take problems from creative designs through completed printings. Students will be participating in activities designed to replicate occupational situations. (Available at West High School Only) Advanced Studio (2 dimensional) (116231/116232) This advanced class is a multi-media class that is open to 10, 11 and 12 grade students upon completion of any one or more of the following classes; Painting, Drawing, or Commercial Art. Student will work with 2 dimensional materials. Computer applications may be included. The development of a portfolio of student work will be required. This course may be repeated for credit. Advanced Studio (3 dimensional) (116421/116422) This advanced class will be offered to students in 10, 11 and 12 grades who have completed courses in either Ceramics and Crafts, or Sculpture. Students will work with 3 dimensional materials, and will be expected to develop a portfolio as part of the requirements for this class. Students will learn about professional artists and their work as a means to develop their own style. This course may be repeated for credit.
