Of the community of Blue Grass, Iowa In 1853, the village of Blue Grass was laid out by J.E. Burnside, John Perrin and James Reynolds. It was situated in a rich, agricultural area about ten miles west of Davenport, Iowa. The name of the town originated from a point of timber on a much-traveled Indian trail leading from Davenport, located on the Mississippi, to Moscow, Iowa, located on the Cedar River. This point was a favorite camping ground of the Indians. In time, the prairie grass was trampled down and destroyed. A bluish green grass resembling the famous blue grass of Kentucky sprang up in its place. For current information, please visit the city's website: http://www.bluegrassia.org Of Blue Grass School The first known school was a log cabin, located somewhere on the south side of the town. The first constructed school was a one-room brick building, built in 1859 for $1,050. A second school was built in 1865 on the northwest edge of town. The Blue Grass school district reorganized the two school schools and merged to become the Blue Grass Independent School. A new two-room building was erected on North Mississippi Street, opening in 1906 and closing in 1957. A reorganization of area school districts brought about many changes. Seven schools in east Muscatine and west Scott counties became a new district called the Blue Grass Community School District. A new brick building with eleven classrooms was opened in July of 1957 to accommodate grades K-8. Six additional classrooms were added to the west side of the building in 1963. On July 1, 1966, Blue Grass School became part of the Davenport School District. The school building became Blue Grass Elementary with grades K-6, with students in seven through nine going to Walcott Junior High School five miles north in the town of Walcott. High school students were bused in to Davenport West, ten miles east. In the fall of 1995, Blue Grass Elementary became of K-5 building. Two classes of special needs preschoolers were added in 2001.
