Officers: Co-presidents: Toni Arkless & Becky Van Nice Vice president: Toni Greenwalt Secretary: Tammy Chalupa Treasurer: Christa DeVore What is a PTA? The acronym PTA stand for Parent Teacher Association. This is a group of concerned parents working with the teachers to improve and enrich their school for their children’s benefit. Our Blue Grass PTA meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month.
What does a PTA do? It was through the efforts of the PTA last year alone that we were able to purchase new computers for the 2nd through 5th grade classrooms! These funds were acquired through several fundraisers that would not have happened without the PTA. As a parent on the PTA you will also get to know the teachers better and find out ways to help them succeed in their classrooms. Another benefit of being on the PTA is getting to know other parents! Meeting parents that have been in the school and community for several years can help you to learn new information that may help you and your child. Everyone wins!
Did you know? Research shows that getting involved in your child’s education helps him/her thrive at school. Not only is your child more likely to earn higher grades and stay in school, but according to a study done by the Los Angeles Annenberg Metropolitan Project, the schools themselves get better when parents take an active role. One great way to keep a constant connection to your child’s school is to join the PTA.
Items discussed in the last PTA meeting (Sept. 8th)
*The Principal gave a report explaining the new anti-bullying program. Reminders for parent/teacher conferences and parking lot safety issues were discussed.
*Information about ordering spirit wear (T-shirts, Sweatshirt and Hoodies with our school name and mascot) was given. Orders forms will be sent home in October.
*Several teachers requested items they felt would help improve their classrooms. These items were voted on by members of the PTA. (only members who have paid the $5 fee may vote on requested items or issues.)
*Info was given about the upcoming Fall Fundraiser. This is a new event we are hoping will raise money for our school and will bring our community closer together! Watch for more information to come in the Thursday Folders.
*Do you shop at Target and have a Target Red Card? You can sign up at www.target.com and support our school by shopping! Target will donate 1% of every purchase made in store or online to our school! Sign up today!
Starting September 21st and running through November 6th we will be having a contest to see which class can collect the most Box tops, Campbell’s Soup labels, Tyson Chicken labels, Swiss Valley milk caps and Our Family labels. Box tops for education can be found on MANY products, see reverse for a full list. The winning class will receive a popcorn party! **All box tops must be cut out on the dotted line. ** GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!
A chili/hotdog dinner is being planned for Friday, October 23, at the Blue Grass Community Club. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Invite your family and friends – this will be a NEW fund raising opportunity to make money for our school.
Market Day orders are due by October 1, internet orders can be placed through 11:00 p.m. on October 2. All orders must be picked up Wednesday, October 7 at 5:15. Volunteers are needed to fill these orders! To volunteer, plan to spend 45 minutes unpacking and sorting orders. Meet the crew at 4:30 in the cafeteria. Well behaved kids are welcome. This event is run strictly by volunteers, be sure to have patience while waiting for your order to be filled!!
School conferences are early this year! They are being held during the week of September 21. If you haven’t signed up to meet with your child’s teacher, please contact them ASAP to schedule an appointment. Let’s have 100% participation!!!
No TV Tuesday is in full swing. Please remember to “Tune-Out” television, video games and computer (unless being used for homework purposes) each Tuesday. Then don’t forget to fill out the No-TV Tuesday slip and place in the box. This is a great way to encourage quality family time.
Volunteers are needed on Thursday mornings to assemble folders. Plan to meet in the cafeteria at 9:00!
Reminders: 10/7 Market Day Pick-up 5:15
PTA meetings will be held the second Tuesday of each month (please note the error on the calendar for October.) Our meeting will be held October 13th, NOT October 12th. No TV Tuesday is in full swing. Please remember to “Tune-Out” television, video games and computer (unless being used for homework purposes) each Tuesday. Then don’t forget to fill out the No-TV Tuesday slip and place it in the box. This is a great way to encourage quality family time. Box tops, Swiss Valley milk caps, Campbell’s soup and Our Family Labels are currently being collected in each classroom. Please remember to CLIP THE COUPONS!! We don’t need to know to what the label was attaced; we just want the little coupon. So be sure to cut on the dotted lines. Watch for upcoming contests—which classroom will collect the most? If you signed up to help with any committees at Unpack Your Backpack Night, the committee chair will contact you when you are needed. Example: if you signed up to help with “Muffins with Mom” in May, you won’t be contaced until the end of April or beginning of may. Rest assured—you will be contacted. Contact any PTA Board member if you have any questions or concerns.
