Kindergarten Screening
A. Kindergarten Roundup
1. The purpose of the kindergarten roundup will be the following:
- to introduce children to the school environment
- to help parents begin to experience a long term meaningful partnership with the school
- to provide information to the parents about the school
- to process documents required by law
- to complete forms required by the school district
- to provide information about how parent/guardian can request screening for health, vision, hearing and/or speech
2. Kindergarten roundup will not be used for the following purposes:
- to create an entrance requirement (to exclude children from kindergarten)
- to create a homogeneous classroom
3. The principal will plan kindergarten roundup with the assistance of others such as the kindergarten teacher, the reading specialist, speech pathologist and the nurse.
B. August/September Kindergarten Information and Development Survey (KIDS)
1. The purpose of the Kindergarten Screener will be the following:
- to assist in planning appropriate instruction for all students, building on each child’s strengths
- to provide baseline data for evaluating growth
2. The Kindergarten Screener will not be used for the following purposes:
- to create an entrance requirement (to exclude children from kindergarten)
- to create a homogeneous classroom
3. The procedures for administering the Kindergarten Screener are as follows:
- The kindergarten teacher will administer the individualized screener (approximately 15 minutes per child) before mid-September in one of the following ways: during the summer (being paid a stipend), on the first district day of school through scheduled appointments (kindergarten students begin school on the second district school day) or during the school year classroom coverage provided)
