Davenport serves as setting for Mary Lewis’ first book, “Second Chance: A Family’s Love Story.” The book is historical fiction and draws from her own family’s genealogy and life in Davenport beginning in the 1880s. Mary is a third generation Davenport Schools student, with her grandmother Emily Bowers beginning in the Davenport Schools in 1892. Mary, maiden name Mary Lu Weiss, was a student at Jefferson Elementary and JB Young Junior High and graduated in 1962 from Central High School. Mary will be presenting her book at the Davenport Public Library, Friday, June 22 at 2 p.m. and again at Barnes and Noble at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. The author will speak about using historical fiction in the classroom and about her genealogical research. The Barnes and Noble book signing will serve as a fundraiser for the Davenport School Museum when the purchaser indicates that they would like the Davenport School Museum to receive a percent of the sale.
