KWQC’s James Stratton Teaches Garfield Students About TV News

James Stratton with Garfield students

Fourth-graders in Mrs. Lindell’s class at Garfield Elementary are learning about the research and inquiry process with a project to create and present a newscast about a natural disaster. To bring their project to life, James Stratton from KWQC TV-6 News talked to students about their different roles to play as anchor, reporter, or citizen. Using Mr. Stratton as a model, students identified the research components needed to create a newsworthy story, explained why the integration of visuals is critical to their newscast, delivered vital information to the community about their natural disaster, and gave any cautionary measures needed for safety. Mr. Stratton also talked about how teamwork between roles is important for a smooth broadcast and urged students to work together to create a successful newscast.
