Two Central High students placed in the 2017 Ida Kramer “Children and the Holocaust” Essay Contest. Grace Hipple won first place for her essay, “Fighting for Freedom: Simone Segouin’s Brace Resistance to Nazi Persecution.” Noor Ain won second place for her essay, “Marion – The Lady Who Inspired Me.” The essay contest, sponsored by The Quad Cities Yom HaShoah Committee, challenged students to research the history of a specific child or youth who was caught in or witnessed the events of the Holocaust in Europe. Students then discussed how learning about the Holocaust through their research, and seeing it through the lens of their historical figure, made the Holocaust more meaningful to them.
