West’s Falcon Friends Enjoy Night to Shine Prom

Time to Shine Prom attendees The West High Falcon Friends Club had an amazing night at the Night To Shine Prom sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. Attendees were welcomed by cheering fans as they walked the red carpet, were given crowns as dance queens and kings, took fun limousine rides, sang karaoke, ate delicious pizza and Chick-fil-a, and danced the night away with their buddies.

Central Swimmers Set School Records at State Meet

Portraits of North students who set school swimming records Central High swimmers, Joseph Shie, Charley Cummins, Andrew Shie, Seth Land, Devin Land, and Wyatt Land placed 11th in the State swim meet. The team set three new school records, including the 400 free relay record that was 36 years old, set in 1981. Joseph Shie, Devin Land, Seth Land, and Andrew Shie swam one second faster to finish in eighth place. Just 15 minutes prior to setting this record, Andrew Shie swam to a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Congratulations swimmers! Numerous Central/CAA Students Win in Scholastic Awards

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards logo Congratulations to the 47 Central High/Creative Arts Academy (CAA) 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Award winners, listed below. These awards included Gold Keys awarded to the top 5-7% of all entries, Silver Keys awarded to the top 7-10%, and Honorable Mentions awarded to the top 10-15%. Gold Key artworks will now be judged at the national level and a reception honoring all Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention winners will be held March 11th at the University of Iowa Belin-Blank Center in Iowa City. North Bowlers Win MAC Championships

North High Bowling Coach Jan Edwards (pictured lower left) was selected as Girls Bowling MAC coach of the year, and bowlers CJ Bakoylis (pictured upper right) and Miranda Miller (pictured lower right) each won Individual MAC Championships, rolling scores of 454 and 459, respectively.

Fillmore Fifth Graders Are the First Group to Attend IMMERSE Program at Putnam

WQAD screenshot of IMMERSE program coverage Fillmore Elementary fifth-graders were the first group of students to attend the IMMERSE program at the Putnam museum where they combined technology, curriculum from their own classroom, and the hands-on learning from the Putnam for an exciting new learning experience. They got a history lesson using the museum’s Egypt exhibit, a biology lesson with the ocean experience exhibit, and science and math lessons in the museum upper hall’s Simpler Machine’s Interactive display. West’s Falcon Friends Presents Bench Press Competition Scholarship Funds

Falcon Friends bench press competition scholarship recipients On February 10th, the Falcon Friends Club at West High, led by Ms. Reagan-Iavarone, hosted a scholarship ceremony in West’s Learning Media Center. On November 5th, the Falcon Friends held a bench press competition as a fundraiser; part of the money raised was donated to the ARC of Southeast Iowa Bill Reagan Scholarship Fund, which supports students intending to major in special education or social work as well as individuals with disabilities pursuing post-secondary education. Several members from Falcon Friends shared their experiences at the bench press competition, including Austin Schiffke, Theresa Lemen, Jordyn Driscoll, and Bree McMahon.

Central Student Named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

Hannah Mandell portrait Congratulations to Central High’s Hannah Mandell who has been named as a Finalist in the 2017 Competition for National Merit® Scholarships. In September, Hannah was named as a Semifinalist. She met all requirements to advance to this next phase, one of 15,000 students to be awarded this distinction across the nation.
