Earlier this year, Buchanan Elementary first-graders visited a farm to see where some food products start. More recently, they enjoyed trips that allowed them to connect how food starts at the farm and goes to a store or restaurant for consumers to purchase. At the local Hy-Vee store, they saw what goes on behind the scenes, touring each department to learn about its role in the store and community. They also got an interactive tour of the Happy Joe’s on West 50th Street in Davenport, learning the different employee roles and how each role helps the restaurant run smoothly, including learning about the different machines and tools used. Many students’ favorite part of the trip was making and eating their own pizzas.
