West Cheerleaders Perform in London Parade

Cheerleaders in London, England Five cheerleaders from West High went to London from December 26th through January 2nd to see all the sights and perform in the London New Year’s Day Parade. Maddy Seago, Rachel McCullough, Sydney Heskett, Abbie Kolberg, and Xana Simpson qualified to be All American cheerleaders at a summer cheer camp by earning qualifying scores, thereby earning the honor of taking part in this amazing experience with cheerleaders from all over the United States.

Central Yearbook Receives Several Excellence Ratings

Central High's 2016 Blackhawk Central High’s 2016 Blackhawk yearbook received a “First Place with Special Merit” award and a “Most Outstanding High School Yearbook” award from the American Scholastic Press Association critique. The yearbook received a remarkable score of 970 points out of 1000. The reviewer commented, “The high quality of your yearbook is indicative of the intelligence and creativity of your students. This is one of the best publications I’ve seen so far this year.” The yearbook also received an “Award of Achievement” from the Iowa High School Press Association and a “First Class” honor rating from the National Scholastic Press Association’s critique.

Fillmore Students Present Habitat Dioramas at Family Event

Fillmore Student's diorama On Friday, January 6th, Fillmore Elementary second grade students held their family event where they presented their habitat dioramas. To prepare for the event, the students researched a chosen habitat, wrote a report on it, compared and contrasted two habitats, and created dioramas.

North Show Choirs Kick off Competition Season

North High show choir North High’s Show Choir Spectacular Spaghetti Dinner and Kickoff Performances were a huge success with over 330 diners in the Wildcat Den and almost 500 performance attendees. Mrs. DeFauw organized this event that allowed the students to exhibit their hard work with their outstanding performances. Northside Establishment will start their competition season this weekend at the Muscatine River City Showcase at 2:45 p.m.

Davenport High School Students Take Home Chromebooks

North High student opening Chromebook To assist with homework and accessing online resources, Davenport Schools has one Chromebook plus ten percent for every student, approximately 13,000 units district wide. Our 4,523 high school students can now opt take their borrowed Chromebooks home to use outside the school day. North High students (pictured) started to receive theirs right before winter break with over 900 taking their Chromebooks home to date.

Davenport Musicians Selected for SEIBA Honor Band

Congratulations to the musicians who were selected to participate in the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association (SEIBA) Honor Band. The students listed below from Sudlow Intermediate, Walcott Intermediate, Wood Intermediate, Central High, North High, and West High will travel to Iowa City on January 21st to rehearse with other students from the southeast district and perform a concert that night at the University of Iowa in the brand new Voxman School of Music. Central Students Get Live Science Lesson

Central High students observe animal visitors Ms. Gassner and Ms. Nelson welcomed animals from Down by the Creek Animal Sanctuary in their combined classes at Central High. The sanctuary’s director, Ms. Debbie Wallace, presented two different kinds of rabbits, a ferret, a cavy (guinea pig), a ball python, and five dogs. All animal visitors have been rescued and currently work as therapy animals in nursing homes and other groups. Ms. Wallace told many stories and provided a wealth of information that brought the study of genetics, evolution, and ecology alive in the classroom.

North Football Players Named to Academic All-State Team

North High's all-academic football players Congratulations to North High’s Zeke Hayslett (left) and Ryan Healey (right) who were named to the Iowa Academic All-State Football Team for the 2016 Season. To be nominated and selected for the Academic All-State Team, head coaches must recommend players who are senior starters, have a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or better at the end of their junior year, and are involved in other extra-curricular activities.
