Central Student Named 2016 Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student

Central High’s Mickey Sloat received the 2016 Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award. The process began during Mickey’s junior year when she founded the Don’t Upstage Yourself program with the mission of “using theatre as a tool to encourage in students a love of the arts, public speaking, and, most importantly, themselves.” In the first phase of the competition, Mickey was awarded $1,000 for being selected as one of fifteen students to move on in the scholarship competition. During the competition’s final stage, she gave a 12-minute presentation focusing on the unique traits of Don’t Upstage Yourself, how she has grown the program, and the Youth in Arts tent she organized this summer. In the end, she was one of the three students to receive top honors and a $5,000 scholarship.
