Central Students Attend Latino Youth Summit

Along with club sponsor, Mrs. Preciad, Central High Latinos Unidos members, Azucena Lopez, Emmanuel Villafaña, Maria Duran-Sanchez, Yasmine Lopez, and John Vander Wal, attended the University of Iowa’s annual Latino Youth Summit where they participated in workshops on creative writing in Spanish, college preparedness, entrepreneurship, and cultural identity. They also networked with other students and adult leaders and toured the university campus.

Fillmore Kicks off GAP Program

On Friday October 14th, Fillmore Elementary hosted a kick off luncheon for the Greater Achievement Plan (GAP) program, which supports third, fourth, and fifth grade students with GAP tablets to take home and use to read 20 minutes daily with myON reader. Fillmore tutoring teachers also have weekly lunch/check-ins to go over minutes read with myON and participate in the Readers Rewards program which logs how many minutes are read each night by each student.

Central Student Named 2016 Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student

Central High’s Mickey Sloat received the 2016 Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award. The process began during Mickey’s junior year when she founded the Don’t Upstage Yourself program with the mission of “using theatre as a tool to encourage in students a love of the arts, public speaking, and, most importantly, themselves.” In the first phase of the competition, Mickey was awarded $1,000 for being selected as one of fifteen students to move on in the scholarship competition. During the competition’s final stage, she gave a 12-minute presentation focusing on the unique traits of Don’t Upstage Yourself, how she has grown the program, and the Youth in Arts tent she organized this summer. In the end, she was one of the three students to receive top honors and a $5,000 scholarship.

Community Collaborates for Science Night at Buchanan

Buchanan Elementary families enjoyed an evening with science on Wednesday, October 12th, to prepare students for the steadily growing STEAM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) in the district. The Family Museum provided ten hands-on stations, including Rubber Band Cars, Static Electricity, Catapults, and Putter’s Edge. This event was the result of community effort with volunteers from Buchanan staff, Christ Church, North High School Ambassadors, and Central High School Key Club.

West Student Runs in State Cross Country Meet

West High’s Andrew Wright qualified for the state cross country meet in Fort Dodge. Andrew finished in fifth place at the district meet at Crow Creek in Bettendorf. It’s his second consecutive year qualifying for State.

West Hosts All City Intermediate String Festival

Davenport’s sixth, seventh, and eighth grade string orchestra students rehearsed and performed in the Davenport All City Intermediate String Festival at West High on Saturday, October 15th. Three Wood Intermediate String Orchestra students were chosen as soloists at the event: Jordan Colton, Kiefer Hammill, and Sofia Magalhaes.

Mid City Artists’ Work Exhibited at Bucktown

Twenty artwork pieces from Ms. Lewis’ Art Foundation classes at Mid City High are being exhibited at 7 Orchids in Bucktown Center for the Arts on Saturday, October 29th, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Davenport Musicians Selected for Junior Honors Orchestra

Thirteen talented musicians from our intermediate and high schools went through a strenuous audition process for Iowa Juniors Honors Orchestra.
