This summer, Senior Katy Axel traveled to China for 17 days with other area students on behalf of the Muscatine/Zhengding sister city relationship. During the first part of the trip, Katy visited Beijing and met with government officials to discuss foreign relationships and build the connection between China’s and United States’ youth. The group also climbed the Great Wall; visited Tiananmen Square; saw the Forbidden City, the Olympic Bird’s Nest, and Water Cube; toured a Temple and the International Table Tennis Training Facilities; and attended many government hosted dinners.
The second part of the trip took place in Shanghai for the Friendship Camp, which hosted over 100 high school students from 20 different countries including Mexico, Canada, Italy, Sweden, Bulgaria, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Russia, and South Korea. Katie participated in different activities around the city including museum tours, a night cruise on the Haungpu River, a home-stay, and an “Amazing Race” around Shanghai. Congratulations to Katy on this incredible opportunity!
