6th grade theatre/dance students recently taught “Everything is Awesome” to students from Garfield and Washington Schools. Early in the fall, Mrs. Reed, Garfield Elementary’s counselor (who is also Iowa Counselor of the Year), asked Mrs. Bracey, CAA integrated arts/theatre/dance instructor, if she and the CAA students could prepare a dance for Garfield students to perform at school assemblies. Shannan Child, Washington Elementary counselor, joined in with students from Washington. Mrs. Bracey and 6th grade CAA students choreographed the dance, and the students experienced breaking down the combinations and teaching. Both groups of students were enthusiastic about the experience. Not only were coordination skills enhanced, but students also realized the challenges involved in memorizing steps quickly, staying focused, and breathing during a cardiovascular workout!
In another story, 6th grade Creative Arts Academy students recently enjoyed ball room dance lessons from Arthur Murray instructors on a “Fantastic Friday,” when all CAA students experience each art form. Arthur Murray Dance Studio is one of the CAA’s community art partners as well as the dance studio used for CAA theatre/dance students.
