The Davenport Community School District has worked hard to keep at-risk students in school and bring back students who have dropped out offering these students the support they may need to finish high school. In a three-year period we’ve managed to cut the drop-out rate in half in our district.
One of our community partners, United Neighbors, plans to build a Peace Garden at their Harrison Street location to serve as a symbol of hope for youth and families. A major component of the Peace Garden will be a program called “Promise Bricks.” Sponsors can purchase bricks engraved with a student’s name and graduation date as a way to show faith in the student’s promise to graduate. The United Neighbors’ Promise Brick Program is now an important component of the Davenport Community School District’s Dropout Prevention/Graduation Advocacy campaign. When a sponsor purchases a Promise Brick they can either designate the brick to a student they know or students who need hope and promise will be identified, and a brick will be placed in the Peace Garden in their honor. Bricks are available at $75 each and may be purchased through United Neighbors, 808 North Harrison, Davenport, IA 52803 or phone 563/322-7363.
