In the fall of 2012 a member of the Central High School Junior ROTC program set out to honor his grandfather, a World War II veteran. Then, he began thinking on a larger scale and wanted to honor all of the alumni of Central High School who were killed in action while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Research uncovered service members from World War II to 1994 with the help of outreach from the local media. A plaque with the names of Central’s alumnae who were killed in action was created and dedicated at the school. Names are being added as they become known.
This year’s annual commemoration will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2014 in the Central High School Auditorium, 1120 Main Street, Davenport. Speakers will include Lieutenant Colonel Joel Russell, First Army Chaplain, Rock Island Arsenal and Davenport Community School District Superintendent Dr. Art Tate, who is a U.S. Army veteran. Families and friends of Central High School alumni are invited to attend, along with veterans of all United States service branches. We will be honoring all of those who have served our country.
