Approximately 30 students in the Sudlow TIGERS group gathered with their mentors in the school cafeteria on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 to make holiday ornaments. TIGERS, an acronym that stands for Taking Interest Guarantees Everyone Reaches Success, pairs at-risk students in grades 6-8 with mentors who work at Sudlow as teachers, para educators and administrators. The program began during the 2012-2013 school year with approximately 15 “TIGERS” and has grown to 38 for the 2013-2014 school year. TIGERS and their mentors have had great experiences together including a student vs. staff baseball game, decorating pumpkins, holding a full Thanksgiving dinner, and a visit to a Quad City Mallards game that included a ride on the zamboni. Not only have student behavioral problems decreased drastically, academic performance has improved as well.
