Students in Katie Pancratz’ Spanish I and II classes at Sudlow Intermediate School celebrated Dia de los Muertos as part of learning not only the Spanish language but also enriching their understanding of certain aspects of Latin American customs and culture. Dia de los Muertos-the Day of the Dead-is a holiday celebrated throughout Latin America on November 1. Believing that the the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, Dia de los Muertos celebrates and honors the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities they enjoyed in life. Death is recognized as a natural part of the human experience. In Latin American countries family members often clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones with flowers on this day.
