Mickey Sloat, an 8th grade student at Williams Intermediate School, advanced to the national level for the second consecutive year in the National History Day (NHD) competition held at the University of Maryland campus, just outside Washington, D.C. The 2013 NHD theme was Turning Points in History. In her individual performance “Game, Set, (Pay) Match: Playing for Equity in Women’s Sports”, Sloat portrayed several leading female athletes, including Billie Jean King, Toni Stone, and Babe Didrikson Zaharias.
National History Day allows students to present history that relates to the annual theme through papers, documentaries, exhibits, websites, or performances. A maximum of two students are selected to represent the State from each category. Winners from each state, along with international winners from places such as Puerto Rico, Southeast Asia, Korea, and Shanghai, take part in the Nationals.
