The Central High School Principal’s Leadership Team Executive Committee became aware that there were many families at Central who might not have enough food to go around during the holiday season. The committee members quickly put together a plan to create holiday dinner boxes for Central families in need. They started with a list of the items they felt would be required to provide a nice holiday meal for a family of 6 or more people, including items for breakfast. The students decided that all items should be non-perishable, so that families could use the food at their convenience.
The Principal’s Leadership Team members collected enough food to complete more than 60 holiday dinner boxes. Guidance counselors were involved in helping choose the families with the greatest needs and are continuing to work with the families to ensure all of the boxes are distributed.
Eight teams from the Davenport Community Schools participated in the 2012 FIRST LEGO League Regional competition on Saturday, December 15, 2012 in the Putnam Museum. The teams are judged on how well they work together and on their presentation in solving a real-world problem. This year’s challenge was to come up with solutions to problems that might be faced by senior citizens.
Teams bring their self-programmed robots to face off against other teams in a live challege which requires them to complete specific missions in a two-minute time frame. Teams learn to identify a problem, come up with a solution and execute the solution. All of these skills are important to students as they enter their chosen profession.
